Japanese carmaker Toyota Kirloskar Motor (Toyota Kirloskar Motor) has got the green signal from the Karnataka government to expand its manufacturing plant in the state. Toyota has its plant in Bidadi, where the company produces Fortuner (Fortuner), Innova Crysta (Innova Crysta) and Urban Cruiser (Urban Cruiser) as well as hybrid vehicles such as the recently introduced Urban Cruiser Hyryder. The plant will be expanded to increase the production capacity of the SUV. The state government on Friday approved Toyota’s proposal among 18 industrial projects worth Rs 34,432 crore.
Toyota Motor will invest Rs 3,600 crore in this facility to manufacture hybrid vehicles with its ICE models such as the Fortuner, Innova Crysta and others in the state. The expansion plan is aligned with Toyota’s future roadmap which includes manufacturing hybrid cars for the Indian markets. Toyota had said that it will go the hybrid route as the EV infrastructure for electric vehicles in India is not yet ready.
Toyota Motor’s new Urban Cruiser Hyryder SUV, which was recently introduced as a fully hybrid model, will be manufactured at the Bidadi plant. This is one of the important reasons for the expansion plan for the Japanese carmaker. The Urban Cruiser Hyryder SUV is Toyota’s first model in a global alliance with Suzuki. Suzuki has a partnership with Maruti in India.
The Urban Cruiser Hyryder SUV will be equipped with a self-charging strong hybrid electric powertrain or Neo Drive powertrain setup. The Neo Drive is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine with Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) technology. It is also equipped with an all-wheel drive system and is offered with the option of a 5-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The carmaker is also offering Toyota Hybrid system in the self-charging hybrid electric Hyryder SUV with 1.5-litre petrol engine.
The Urban Cruiser Hyryder is expected to be launched in the Indian market in the next few weeks. The hybrid version of the SUV will compete with Maruti Suzuki’s Grand Vitara. Both the SUVs were introduced in the Indian market within a few days of each other.
