West Bengal Teachers Appointment:

West Bengal Teachers Appointment: The West Bengal government has decided to appoint over 32,000 teachers of the upper primary and primary level by March next year to improve the education system in the state. According to media reports, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee gave this information. The Chief Minister said that the process to fill at least 10,500 vacancies at the primary level (classes 1-4) and 14,000 at the upper primary level (classes 1-5) would be completed before October this year.

The Chief Minister further said that by March 2022, about 7,500 more posts of primary teachers would be filled. At the same time, cautioning against any lobbying, he said that the appointments will be made on the basis of merit list. Those who qualify the exam are eligible for the job. The Chief Minister said the appointments were stuck due to cases in the high court.

The Calcutta High Court had in February ordered an interim stay on the recruitment process following petitions filed by job aspirants alleging discrepancies in the merit list issued by the West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE). The High Court later directed the West Bengal Central School Service Commission (WBCSSC) to ensure that deserving candidates are not left out and the recruitment process is completed in a transparent manner.

The Calcutta High Court had initially asked the commission to publish the list of interviews by May 10, though given some time in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. Around five lakh candidates had appeared in the examination. The Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for the recruitment of teachers in upper primary schools was conducted in August 2015 and its results were declared in September 2016. The results of the interview were declared in August 2019.
