Unnao verdict: Court to decide Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s fate today; Read all facts

New Delhi: After more than two and half years a 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a Delhi court is scheduled to deliver verdict in the case on Monday, December 16 which is also the seventh anniversary of 2012 “Nirbhaya rape case”.

Sengar has been an MLA from Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh for 17 years, is in jail for sexually assaulting a minor girl in 2017.

According to the victim, the BJP MLA raped her on several occasions from when she was 11 years old. He, as per the allegation, also confined the girl in his house, forced her to give up studies and threatened her of dire consequences if she ever tried to raise a voice.

April 8, 2018, the victim threatened to immolate herself outside Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s house blaming that the police refused to register her case in August 2017.

The case drew sharp criticism for the BJP governments in Uttar Pradesh and Centre, and also saw many ups and downs in these two years.

Here’s all you want to know about the case:

The victim said in her complaint that she went to Sengar’s house on June 4, 2017.

Sengar allegedly took her, 16-year-old then, to a room and sexually assaulted her and when she tried to resist the accused threatened to kill her entire family.

After seven days of the incident, the victim was allegedly kidnapped by three men and was allegedly gang-raped by them for the next nine days. She was also kept intoxicated while the accused were repeatedly changing the location, the FIR stated.

According to the victim, the trio were Sengar’s men and they also tried to sell her off.

As the girl was missing her mother approached to the police and a search operation was launched by the police. But when the accused came to know that they are being searched, they dropped the victim back.

On June 20, 2017, a case was filed against the trio — Shubham Singh, Awadh Narayan and Brijesh Yadav and they were arrested by the police.

The victim’s mother also alleged that she had alleged abduction but the police did not register a case.

Thereafter, soon after coming back to home the victim moved to Delhi to stay with her relatives.

In August 2017, the girl elaborated her ordeal to her aunt who then told victim’s father about the incident following that he approached the police.

The survivor then lodged a complaint against Sengar and his associated but the police allegedly did not take action as the key accused was an MLA of the BJP. The girl also alleged that she even approached the court seeking direction for the police but she was not heard.

Also, on April 6, 2018, the victim’s father was allegedly attacked by the MLA’s brother and his associates who also threatened his to not approach the police.

Finding the situated turning tough for herself and her family, the victim decided to take a “big step”.

The girl then on April 8, 2018, attempted to immolate herself outside Adityanath’s residence. Only then, her mother could be able to file a complaint against the BJP MLA.

Unfortunately, the victim’s father died after succumbing to his injuries in police custody that week.

Thereafter, the Central Bureau of Investigation took over the probe in April 2018 and arrested Sengar.

In August 2019, a Delhi court, however, framed charges against the BJP MLA and nine others. The accused have been charged under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code including murder, criminal intimidation, wrongful restraint and criminal conspiracy.

On 28 July, the survivor, her two aunts and mother were met with an accident while they were on way to Rae Bareli with her lawyer. Their car was hit by a speeding truck in which two aunts of the victim died while she and her lawyer sustained severe injuries.

In October, the CBI in its chargesheet said that it could not establish a “conspiracy” in the case and accident as the collision took place due to the negligence of the truck driver.
