New Delhi: Everything started with the slogan of “common man” or “ordinary man”. The question was: “Why the common man is fuming and what he needs,” and the answer came out in the shape of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
AAP, the only political party that gave importance to the people since its inception, is now ready to retain power in the national capital. People, who run a democracy, and India is the largest democracy in the world.
But it is almost impossible for a less than decade-old party to retain power in Delhi-like important state.
Now, how Arvind Kejriwal, erstwhile a bureaucrat, managed to do this?
The answer is simple, the ‘Aam Aadmi’ or the common man.
What an Aam Aadmi needs?
Just a sense of satisfaction and relaxation is the answer.
When Kejriwal came to power, he promised to ease the life of people who were struggling for their daily needs with a dream to enjoy at least basics.
“I have not seen this miracle ever before. I had a zero electricity bill last month. I thought whether I was using it (electricity) less. But whatever I used it was enough for my needs,” said Shweta, a housewife who lives in Jahangirpuri slums area.
He (Kejriwal) also taught us how to spend life in reasonable resources, it very good. Now, we do not waste things, thanks to Kejriwal, she added.
“As it is not a posh area, people from middle-class and lower-middle-class live here. We have a limited income. In this case, if my husband spends money in liquor then nothing is worse than it. Hence, we decided to protest against a proposed wine shop and the government supported us,” Seema, a housewife, whose husband used to sell daily use items in the weekly market in Burari.
“We were not that lucky earlier before. I now get enough water for my use every day. I do not have a water connection so I used to get drinking water from my neighbours. They were not that kind before. But in recent years, they have started offering me the same. It is all because of Kejriwal,” said Mamata, a daily labourer from Azadpur area.
Apart from basic amenities, there is something that no one did earlier before.

She said that I am not saying that my husband won’t drink now, but no at least he has less option. Similarly, if there would be less number of such outlets, the consumption of such hazardous things would surely come down.
Along with free electricity, free water, free education and other things, the AAP government brought transparency in the system. “I have noticed a decline in the bribery. Now, a common man can get his works done without paying a single penny. It is a good thing,” said Suresh Chand, a government employee who lives in Rohini area.
