Aam Aadmi Party MLA and Delhi Waqf Board chairman Amanatullah Khan is facing several probes in matters pertaining to alleged irregularities adopted during the appointments in the Board in 2016.
The Anti-Corruption Branch of Delhi has also advocated for his removal as the chairman of the Board. In between, Imams of various mosques which come under the Board staged a protest against Khan and the Delhi government on Wednesday at Jantar Mantar.
The protesters were demanding their wages and stipends that they used to get until some time back but now have stopped receiving.
Maulana Sikandar-e-Azam, Imam of Wazirpur industrial area mosque, expressed his anger saying that earlier, people used to donate in mosques and Imams were getting some support with this amount. Thereafter, Khan declared that he will provide financial support to the Imams and he did.
“But since past some months we have not received even a single penny and what the worst is, people have also stopped donating. Now we are not getting support from anywhere,” he added.
The Maulana urged the government to take action against Khan and said that if the Delhi government doesn’t want to give us a stipend then tell clearly, we’ll ask people to support us.
In January 2019, the Delhi government announced a salary hike for Imams in Delhi’s mosques. But the Imams allege that they are not getting it for the past some months.
Aneesh Ahmad Ansari, another protester said that no doubt that Khan has good intentions but he can’t do anything without the prior permission of someone who is sitting on his head and making decisions.
When he was asked who is making decisions and preventing Khan to do these things, he replied, “Kejriwal”.
He also said that even earlier the amount was given because the elections were heading and now they will again do something whenever elections come. “But what we should do now?,” he summed up.
