New Delhi: Fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi has been caught in Dominica. He recently went missing from Antigua and Barbuda and an Interpol Yellow Notice was issued against him. Dominico’s police arrested Choksi on Tuesday night following a yellow notice issued at the request of Antigua and Barbuda. Choksi had been living there since 2018 after taking citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda.
Was absconding in 2018
The yellow notice is issued by Interpol to trace the missing people. Efforts are now being made to hand over Choksi to the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda. Mehul Choksi is wanted in a Rs 13,500-crore Punjab National Bank loan fraud case in India. He absconded in January 2018, in view of the ongoing case against him in India.
Family breathed a sigh of relief
Mehul Choksi’s lawyer Vijay Agarwal said that I have spoken to his family. They are happy and relieved that Mehul Choksi has now come to know. Efforts are being made to talk to him so that the picture can be cleared that how he reached Dominica.
Was missing since Sunday
He also had citizenship in the Caribbean country. According to Antigua police, he was last seen in his car on Sunday. The police carried out a search operation and recovered his car but no trace of Choksi was found. Choksi’s lawyer Vijay Agarwal also testified on Tuesday that the diamond trader was missing since Sunday.
CBI was also doing verification
The CBI, which is investigating the allegations against Choksi, was also involved in verifying the case through formal and informal channels. CBI had also approached Interpol in this regard. Interpol has issued a red corner notice against Choksi at the request of the CBI.
Preparation for Nirav’s extradition as well
According to Antigua police, Choksi was last seen in his car on Sunday before going missing. The police had recovered his car by conducting a search operation, but no trace of Choksi was found. Let us tell that along with Choksi, his nephew Nirav Modi is also wanted in the PNB scam. Nirav is currently in a London jail and the Indian government is trying to extradite him.
CBI is trying to verify
The CBI, which is investigating the allegations against Choksi, is trying to verify the case through formal and informal channels. Police were asking for information from people
Antigua’s police launched a search to search for the missing businessman. They were collecting information about Choksi by showing people a picture of him. Choksi’s disappearance was reported at the Johnson Point Police Station. Local media reports quoted police commissioner Atlee Radney as saying that the police were tracing Choksi’s hideouts.
What the Antigua Prime Minister said
Antigua Prime Minister Gaston Browne said that he had no reliable information that Choksi had fled the country. He said that it is more likely that he is still in Antigua. In a statement to Parliament, he said that our officials are cooperating with the Government of India, neighbouring countries and the International Police Organization to locate Choksi.
