‘Narasimha Rao Ignored Calling Army During 1984 Riots’, Reveals Manmohan Singh

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh made a big statement on Wednesday about the 1984 Sikh riots. He said that if the then Home Minister PV Narasimha Rao had paid attention to the talk of Indra Kumar Gujral, the incident of 1984 anti-Sikh violence could have been avoided. Manmohan Singh said this at a function organized on the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Gujral.

He also said that Gujral had advised Narasimha Rao in this regard. Former PM Singh said that ‘When 84 Sikh riots were happening in Delhi, Gujral ji went to the then Home Minister Narasimha Rao. He told Rao that the situation was so serious that it is necessary for the government to call the army as soon as possible. If Rao had taken the necessary action by following Gujral’s advice, then the 1984 genocide could have been avoided.

Let us say that after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her bodyguards in 1984, there were anti-Sikh riots in the country. In which 3,325 people were killed. 2,733 people were killed in Delhi alone. The SIT was formed on 12 February 2015 following the recommendation of the Justice GP Mathur (revision) committee appointed by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The three-member SIT has so far reopened 80 of the 650 cases registered in connection with anti-Sikh riots.

 12th Prime Minister Gujral died in 2012

At the same time, former Prime Minister Indra Kumar Gujral died on 30 November 2012 at the age of 92. He was the 12th Prime Minister of India from April 1997 to March 1998. He was also remembered by former President Pranab Mukherjee, Union Minister Jaishankar and former Union Minister Karan Singh at the event held on Gujral’s birth anniversary.
