The Supreme Court today requested an explanation from the Assam government about the accusation that the NRC state coordinator was making communal statements.
A bank headed by the President of Supreme Court S A Bobde noted that the coordinator should not make such statements and asked the Assam government to explain this. The Court’s observation came after the principal lawyer Kapil Sibal drew attention to the alleged statement made by the NRC state coordinator, Hitesh Dev Sarma.
Several other petitions related to the NRC in Assam have been filed and the bank issued notices to the Center and the Government of Assam and sought a response within four weeks.
A petition was also heard stating that about 60 children had been excluded from the NRC but their parents had been granted citizenship through the NRC. Attorney General K K Venugopal and Attorney General Tushar Mehta, who appeared for the Center and the Assam government, said those children will not be separated from their parents.
