Trade Unions Strike: 25 million people to hit roads on Jan 8

New Delhi : The country’s ten main trade unions have called for a nationwide strike on January 8 against the government’s anti-people policies. According to trade unions, 25 crore people will be involved in this strike. Various unions and federations including trade unions INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, UTUC announced to go on strike on 8 January 2020 in September last year. Ten central trade unions said in a joint statement that we are expecting the participation of at least 25 crore people in the forthcoming general strike on January 8. After that we will take many more steps and demand the government to withdraw anti-labor, anti-people, anti-national policies.

The statement said that the Ministry of Labor has so far failed to give assurance to the workers on any of their demands. The meeting was called by the Ministry of Labor on 2 January 2020. The attitude of the government is contempt towards the workers.

The statement said that 60 students’ organizations and some university officials have also decided to join the strike. Their agenda is to protest the increased fees and commercialization of education. Trade unions have criticized violence at Jawaharlal Nehru University and similar incidents on other university campuses and announced support to students and teachers across the country.

The unions expressed displeasure that not a single Indian Labor Conference has been organized since July 2015. Apart from this, the unions have also opposed the framing of codes of labor laws and privatization of public undertakings.
