Tata Power-DDL launches ‘Solar Ambassador’ initiative under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL), the leading power utility serving nearly 9 million residents in North Delhi, today launched its pioneering ‘Solar Ambassador’ initiative to promote widespread adoption of rooftop solar solutions under the Government of India’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. As part of this initiative, Tata Power-DDL has appointed 20 specially trained officials as Solar Ambassadors who will work closely with communities to accelerate awareness and adoption of residential rooftop solar systems.

The initiative was unveiled on National Youth Day at the at TPSDI – CENPEID Green Energy Skill Centre Delhi, Rohini, in the presence of Ravi Dadhich, Special Secretary (Power), Government of Delhi; Dwijadas Basak, Chief Executive Officer; Kiran Gupta, Chief – Customer Experience, Commercial, Government Affairs, EAC & Consumer Litigation; Praveen Agrawal, Chief – Human Resource, Industrial Relations, Facility Management & Health Services; Rahul Kumar, Head – Special Customer Management & Solar; and Shashank Sharma, HoD – G&I, NBS & Solar, Tata Power-DDL, along with other senior officials of the company.

Taking forward its motto of ‘Community Empowerment Through Clean Energy’, the 20 trained Solar Ambassadors will serve as dedicated advocates for solar energy across North-West Delhi, with the objective of strengthening public understanding of the benefits of rooftop solar adoption.

All Solar Ambassadors have undergone an extensive training in rooftop solar technologies at TPSDI – CENPEID Green Energy Skill Centre Delhi. Their mandate includes spreading awareness about the advantages of rooftop solar installations, educating households on sustainable energy solutions, and acting as a vital link between government policies and nearly 1.5 million consumers within Tata Power-DDL’s operational area. Each ambassador has been provided with a distinctive jacket, symbolising pride, leadership, and official recognition.

Introducing the initiative, the Tata Power-DDL spokesperson said, “Empowering young professionals with future-ready green energy skills is essential for driving India’s clean energy transition. The Solar Ambassador initiative reflects Tata Power-DDL’s commitment to nurturing youth leadership in sustainability while supporting the national mission of expanding rooftop solar adoption under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. With structured training and on-ground engagement, these ambassadors will act as catalysts for change—enabling households to confidently adopt solar energy and contributing to a resilient and self-reliant energy ecosystem.”

Speaking at the launch, Dadhich said, “India’s clean energy transition depends significantly on how effectively we empower the next generation. Through the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the Government of India aims to create one crore solar-powered households across the country. While available space for solar installations may be limited, it is imperative that we optimally utilise every possible rooftop and surface. Initiatives like Tata Power-DDL’s Solar Ambassador programme play a crucial role in bridging policy intent with grassroots action by creating informed advocates who can drive awareness, adoption, and long-term impact at the community level.”

The campaign, spearheaded by Tata Power-DDL’s Solar Group, aspires to elevate the role of local communities and the younger generation in fostering sustainable development, thereby making a substantial contribution to India’s national clean energy mission.

The Solar Ambassador program underscores Tata Power-DDL’s profound conviction that community-led progress creates shared and long-term value for society at large.
