Under water Metro in India: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of projects worth Rs 15,400 crore in Kolkata, which also includes the underwater metro line.

PM Modi is currently on a 10-day tour of 12 states and union territories and this is his second visit to West Bengal.

Main projects launched by PM Modi in Kolkata

Underwater Metro: PM Modi inaugurates the Howrah Maidan to Esplanade portion of the East-West Corridor of Kolkata Metro. This will be India’s first underwater metro.

Under water Metro in India: This East-West Metro section, spanning 4.8 kilometres, has been constructed at a cost of ₹4,965 crore.

Under water Metro in India: This is the deepest metro station in the country, which is 30 meters below the ground.

This corridor aims to connect important areas including the IT hub Salt Lake Sector V.

2. Operations: PM Modi has inaugurated the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade corridor but according to the information given by Central Railway, passenger services will be started in the coming days.

3. Additional train services: Along with the Underwater Metro, PM Modi also flagged off other train services in Kolkata with the aim of increasing urban mobility. These include Kavi Subhash-Hemant Mukhopadhyay and Taratala-Majerhat Metro Corridor.

4. Nationwide Project Dedication: PM Modi also dedicated several projects to the nation during the visit.

These projects include Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramawadi section, Kochi Metro Rail Phase I Extension Project, Agra Metro Project from Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar, and Delhi- Meerut RRTS corridor includes Duhai-Modinagar (North) corridor.

5. Public rally: Later in the day, PM Modi also addressed a public rally at Barasat in North 24 Parganas district, located near Sandeshkhali.
