Pancreatic cancer is a type of cancer that originates in the pancreas, an important part of the digestive system. Early detection of this cancer often presents challenges and is therefore a matter of serious concern for physicians.

Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms

Pancreatic cancer may have various symptoms, although they may not become apparent until the disease progresses. It has some common symptoms such as:

Jaundice: Yellowing of the skin and eyes due to the accumulation of bilirubin is often associated with tumors affecting the bile duct, which can predispose a person to pancreatic cancer.

Digestive problems: Changes in bowel habits, such as light-colored stools and dark urine, indicate the effects of pancreatic cancer on the digestive system.

Loss of appetite: Sudden loss of appetite along with nausea and vomiting can also be a sign of pancreatic cancer.

Treatment

Treatment of pancreatic cancer is a complex process that usually involves several procedures:

Patient’s medical history and physical examination: The healthcare provider begins by reviewing the patient’s medical history and performing a physical examination to identify potential risk factors and symptoms.

Imaging tests: Various imaging tests, such as CT scan, MRI, and ultrasound, are helpful in visualizing the pancreas and detecting any abnormalities.

Biopsy: A biopsy, where a small sample of pancreatic tissue is removed for examination, is often necessary to confirm the presence of cancer cells.

Blood tests: Increased levels of certain substances in the blood, such as CA 19-9, may indicate pancreatic cancer. However, these markers are not definitive in themselves.

Treatment options

Treatment for pancreatic cancer depends on factors such as the stage of the cancer, the overall health of the patient, and the location of the tumor. There are some major methods for general treatment such as:

Surgery: If the cancer is local and has not spread extensively, the tumor can be removed with surgery.

Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells or slow their growth and is often used in combination with surgery.

Radiation therapy: This treatment uses high-energy rays to target and destroy cancer cells.

Targeted therapy: Targeted drugs aim to target specific abnormalities in cancer cells, disrupting their growth and spread.

Forecast and ongoing research

The biggest challenge in identifying pancreatic cancer is that it is not detected in the early stages, so it is detected and treated only after it has progressed. The survival rate of patients suffering from this disease is relatively low, one of the main reasons for which is its not being discovered early.
